– Sold OutThe June Gold Peach Tree is a vigorous and productive early-season peach known for its large, attractive fruit and traditional sweet peach flavor. The peaches have golden-yellow skin covered with a bright red blush and juicy yellow flesh.
June Gold is one of the earlier peaches to ripen and is valued for fresh eating, preserves, cobblers and homemade desserts. It requires more winter chilling than most peaches developed specifically for North Florida.
Plant Details
Alabama Extension lists June Gold as an early-season peach requiring approximately 650 chill hours. Mississippi State University lists it at approximately 600–650 chill hours, with fruit ripening around late May under Mississippi growing conditions.
Fruit and Flavor
June Gold produces attractive yellow peaches with a red blush covering much of the skin. The flesh is yellow, juicy and melting, with good traditional peach flavor.
June Gold is generally classified as a clingstone peach. The flesh may loosen somewhat from the pit when the fruit becomes completely ripe, but it should not be advertised as a true freestone variety.
The fruit is excellent for eating fresh and may also be used for preserves, peach butter, cobblers, pies and other desserts.
Pollination
June Gold is self-fertile, so one tree can produce peaches without another peach variety nearby.
A second peach tree is not required for cross-pollination. However, bees and other pollinating insects help move pollen among the flowers and can improve overall fruit set.
Disease Resistance
June Gold has shown useful resistance to bacterial spot, an important disease of peach trees in warm, humid southeastern climates.
Disease resistance does not mean the tree is immune. Proper pruning, good air circulation, sanitation and preventive care may still be needed to protect the tree and developing fruit.
North Florida Growing Note
June Gold requires approximately 600–650 chill hours. This is higher than the chill requirement of most peach varieties developed specifically for dependable production in North Florida.
The tree may grow and produce fruit in colder parts of the Florida Panhandle, but flowering and fruit production could be inconsistent following mild winters. Insufficient winter chilling may cause delayed leaf growth, uneven flowering and reduced fruit set.
UF/IFAS describes Gulfcrimson as a more consistently cropping replacement for June Gold in the North Florida and south Georgia region. Customers seeking more dependable production in the DeFuniak Springs area may have better results with Gulfcrimson, Flordaking and other peaches with lower chilling requirements.
June Gold should be listed as a peach that may perform in the colder Florida Panhandle but is generally better suited to cooler climates than most of North Florida.
Planting and Care
Plant June Gold in full sun where it will receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.
Choose a location with excellent drainage. Peach trees do not tolerate standing water or constantly wet roots. Avoid low areas where water collects after heavy rain.
Train the tree to an open-center or vase shape with three to four main scaffold branches. This allows sunlight and air to reach the center of the tree and makes harvesting and routine care easier.
Thin young peaches when they are approximately nickel-sized, leaving about 6–8 inches between fruit. Proper thinning improves fruit size and helps prevent branches from breaking under the weight of a heavy crop.
Prune annually while the tree is dormant because peaches produce fruit primarily on wood grown during the previous season.
